2005 Pinot Gris Willamette Valley

The 2005 Elk Cove Vineyards Pinot Gris shows continuity of varietal expression with beautiful white flowers, such as honeysuckle, hinting of springtime freshness, while lending notes of crispness with citrus and grapefruit. Yet true to the Elk Cove Vineyards’ style, there is richness in the mouthfeel to give a full and satisfying balanced finish. Drink this lovely white wine as an aperitif or with a variety of food pairings from salmon and main-course salads to Asian and Thai influenced dishes.

2005 was an interesting year, with one of the driest winters and wettest springs on record! And unlike recent vintages that brought warmer weather, early ripeness and higher alcohol, this year’s harvest occurred later than most expected, resulting in cooler temperatures that will lead to lower alcohol levels, structured acidity and ideal flavor development. Vintage 2005 in the Willamette Valley will be a return to finesse and elegance, which has long characterized classic Oregon wines. Specifically, the white wines will be brightly aromatic with well-balanced fruit-to-acid ratios and refreshingly normal alcohol levels!

The fruit is hand-harvested from select hillside vineyards in the northern Willamette Valley. Our estate Pinot Gris is planted in a high-density format, which undergoes shoot and crop thinning for low yields.

The Willamette Valley has the perfect climate for this delicate cool weather white wine.  We have enough sunlight and warmth for ripening, but our cool evenings help retain varietal character and prevent over-ripening. We whole-cluster press our pinot gris grapes, then ferment the juice at very cool temperatures in small stainless steel tanks.  This gentle treatment protects the aromatic qualities and enhances the natural richness of the Pinot Gris grapes, creating our most popular white wine.
